THE ARTIST

Matthew Norman is an artist and designer in Raleigh NC. He grew up in Plymouth NC, near the Albemarle area of flat farms and swamplands where his mother’s and father’s families had lived from the time of the first English Settlers. Matthews’s mother, herself an artist, encouraged him at a very early age to draw and paint, and growing up he also studied with another local artist.

Throughout his life Matthew has continued drawing and painting. He studied portraiture at the National Academy of Art in Washington, D.C. while a student at Georgetown, and subsequently in the army he did portraits of fellow soldiers. He studied drawing with Howard Regovan at the University of Iowa while serving as Director of Systems at the university hospital, and subsequently studied visual design with painter Joe Cox at NC State School of Design, where he received a Master’s degree in architecture. Through the years he has also worked in other media, including pottery, stained glass, and furniture.        More…
