Throughout his life Matthew has continued drawing and painting.
He studied portraiture at the National Academy of Art in
Washington, D.C. while a student at Georgetown, and subsequently
in the army he did portraits of fellow soldiers. He studied drawing
with Howard Regovan at the University of Iowa while serving as
Director of Systems at the university hospital, and subsequently
studied visual design with painter Joe Cox at NC State School of
Design, where he received a Master’s degree in architecture.
Through the years he has also worked in other media, including
pottery, stained glass, and furniture.
